"Are you kidding me? When SHIELD comes in and does whatever they want they smash it to pieces." A voice called out in a fit of rage as she tossed a piece of equipment into the wall and smashed into about a dozen more pieces as it fell below them. "My father's work is damaged beyond repair we might as well start from scratch again." Sinthea said with a low grumble underneath her breath. If anything, Sinthea was similar to her father in many ways and having a low fuse was one of them as some of the hydra agents were stunned as she tossed it with such force and even she didn't have any super powers.
"What are you two staring at!? Go clean that mess up?" She said as the hydra agents quickly did as she told. As Sinthea began to look around the room she sighed, there was a lot to be done to even attempt to get this place up in the air again let alone in operational shape. Above the water it was a sunny day and no one seemed to be aware of the dangers that lurked below. Sinthea walked around exploring the place a bit and recognized many things that had been proof that Hydra was there. Teathered and worn flags of the snake symbol lined the wall, that would've been something that her father was approving of and would've been proud of. There was hardly any electrical equipment or electricity supplied to this area so that was their first concern of getting things in working condition again.
"Ma'am we have cleaned up the mess. Is there anything else we can do?" Hydra agents asked as Sinthea nodded.
"It's going to take a lot to restore this place, but I have my plans and hopes that my father is alive and doing well, er maybe not doing well. Let's see if we can get this place at least looking semi decent while we are here. And just maybe we'll get this place above water." Sinthea said though she was aware that SHIELD might've been watching with their paranoid little eyes.
"I still can't believe it, the first super soldier experiment wound up being my father and they call him a failure. They flushed his dreams of trying to help the world and in return he retaliated with something far greater than anyone could imagine and that's Hydra." Sinthea said as she cracked her knuckles as she saw some of the hydra agents were still standing around. "Well what did I say? GET TO WORK!" She said with a low growl towards the agent as he screamed in terror and ran away in a bit of fear to hurry up with the others. Slackers were not welcomed.
Being anywhere near this fortress wasn’t exactly Arno’s idea of the greatest business trip. He had only been out here once or twice before to be a consultant for HYDRA but they had tried taking matters into their own hands. They wanted his tech or advice, and he had occasionally offered it to them but their progress was still…slow, extremely slow. But he had been satisfied with the arrangement of only meeting from time to time to talk about business matters or occasionally taking a mission for the organization. It was simple, easy, and he avoided drawing too much attention to himself. Doing so would certainly bring negative publicity and that wasn’t something Arno wanted.
But to be called out all the way to the fortress to actually help was another matter entirely. One of HYDRA’s lieutenants had requested his presence despite Arno’s outright protests, protest that always went ignored. Why waste his time arguing when he usually was rarely heard on the meetings but other matters they tended to respect his decisions. This was not one of those times. “Should have taken this offer up months ago. I got other things to do rather than act as their lacky.” Arno muttered under his breath as he came to the location, scanning the area at first to ensure no one was around or passerbys were at risk in seeing him. Once Alkhema made a confirmation that they were alone Arno finally dove into the water and down to where the Island Fortress was, far from prying eyes and out of reach of SHIELD or governments, far as he knew at least.
He landed on a hatch that one HYDRA soldier opened, allowing access through an airlock which drained before allowing him in and the liquid metal of his suit disappeared from his body back within himself. Popping a few areas on his body and adjusting the polo shirt he wore, Arno went to make his way to where he was supposed to meet the head hancho there only to watch as someone ran screaming in terror from something. Or perhaps someone. HYDRA’s heads weren’t exactly known to be pleasant people and his curiosity got the better of him as he changed his path to follow where the agent had come from, coming across a young red haired woman decked in quite the attire. She radiated anger and power, no doubt being the person who had put themselves in charge for this HYDRA cell.
“You know, scaring your lackies isn’t exactly going to get this place flying again.” Arno commented, crossing his arms as he stood in the door way. “But perhaps I can solve some of your electrical and technological problems that seem the main issue here. After all, I wasn’t called all this way for a Sunday stroll.” Arno suggested towards her.
"Well they aren't going to get anything working with their pea sized brains all they did was scream and run since they think this place is haunted. What a bunch of weaklings." Sinthea said as she looked back at a new arrival. She half expected it to be a lackie grunt but it was instead someone else. To Sinthea it was someone she had only heard of and never met until just now, Arno Campbell had been an interesting man as he came forward and she could tell right off the bat that he was intelligent and far smarter than the lackies that she had brought with her. A few could handle rifles ad weapons, some were good with electronics and others weren't, but if they were pit against the Avengers right now things might be a bit...well go horribly bad!
"Hm are you sure that you know what you're doing here, Mr. Carbonell? I've heard of your intelligence but never met you until now...you could say I'm a bit...skeptical." She said putting her hands on her hips as she saw the older man come forward. "And believe me the Red Skull doesn't like having to deal with people who are liars." She added raising one eye brow beneath her dyed red hair suppose it was a gift to look like her father. And not to mention it would fit her costume more than anything.
"But if you are able to get this up into the air and flying, there will indeed be a reward for you probably a large sum of money will be waiting for you, if you want it." Sinthea said as she looked down at the machines. Some of them had been so badly dismantled by SHIELD there was probably no hope of bringing them back. But if Arno had said exactly what he meant there might be some hope for the flying fortress to rise above the ashes. It's like the saying about the phoenix, it would come up from its watery grave. Sinthea liked that about Hydra, it was also just as mysterious it would rise up and when someone attempted to kill one of the heads of the dragon one more would come up, stronger, smarter and a lot tougher than the last round. Suppose that was what made them so deadly to begin with.
"If you're wondering what I'm here for, I'm the current second in command for Hydra, since my father is missing I've been trying to round up what lackies have been missing since he disappeared. A lot of our followers are either too old or not interested in joining, perhaps we need some new flesh and blood in the team." Sinthea pointed out seeing that the few lackies they did had didn't exactly have anything great about them. They were just normal and boring. And incredibly...well stupid!
"Know what I'm doing? Ma'am, I have to wonder if your underlings know what they're doing." Arno scoffed, somewhat insulted at being questioned of what he was doing there. "For the record, your organization was the one to approach me first, I was perfectly fine running my company but they were the ones that maneuvered me into this investment." Arno explained to her. If she was the newest heads of HYDRA he was going to make it quite clear this was not exactly his first choice of being there on a day like this. "You want to take it up with someone, take it up with the other heads of HYDRA, I'm simply handling our promised arrangements."
Moving over to the nearest console, Arno lifted it carefully, but coughed as some dust got into his face and waving it away to avoid breathing in too much. The last thing he needed was layers of dust compromising his already fragile health right now. He peered into the machine, seeing a lot of wires were fried and destroyed, probably from combat or some kind of attack on the fortress and he began disconnecting them and throwing them behind him. He could already tell the main controls obviously haven't exactly been touched quite yet. Fact of the matter was, this was going to take a fair bit of time to fully repair, even he could see that.
"You want this done so badly? Perhaps you should get your men to start worrying about the more important parts rather than sporadically repairing things here and there." He spoke towards Sinthea as he then pushed himself back up and leaned against the open console with folded arms. "For one, these haven't even been touched yet. So even if you got the turbines, engines, or whatever this hunk of junk uses to fly repaired they would be useless without the main component there to actually get it going." Arno nodded towards the broken down console, obviously already having an idea of where they should go with this. "My expert opinion is start with the console, generators, and power sources before you start considering anything else. Weapon systems are useful, but not nearly as much as a strong defense. Should you come under attack that might be your only saving grace."
Standing from the console, he gave Sinthea a light shrug. "Besides, some of the tech aboard this fortress is of my design, so wherever they are using it I'll no doubt be able to have some understanding." He assured her, before giving the slightly chuckle. "Besides, you could say I have an strange...way of thinking.
"Unfortunately father didn't exactly let me delve into the realm of electronics and gadgets, I had to beg him pretty much for a phone like normal people have on them." Sinthea said as she felt like she was being lectured by Arno on what to do here. She didn't know much about electronics here, but she did know that they had to get this place up and running before the Red Skull decided to show his sorry face around here. However she knew they had some time, while the Avengers were having their fun they also could worry about the other groups out there like the Dark Avengers. Sinthea wondered, if there was a chance that she and the Dark Avengers and Hydra could get together to form an alliance, after all the old saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend here." Could indeed come in handy here.
"Well if you think the generators are the best way to go then so be it, mister." Sinthea said as she crossed her arms. "If anything my hydra lackies can at least stand guard while they work they have some enhanced weapon and technology with them. And you are very much protected by me too." She said giving him a soft wink. Despite being lectured about what to do, Sinthea was trying her best to at least get on Arno's good side, a bit manipulative at some point, maybe too?
"It is a shame though back the days this was a top notch foretress, agents of SHIELD and Captain America came to storm this place and destroyed everything. You would've thought they could take a hold of it and use it for their own fortress, but instead they drop it in the middle of the ocean. Those would be stories that I'd be told while growing up by my adopted family." Sinthea said. "My father wasn't exactly a great father figure either." She said mumbling that last part under her breath as she let Arno work away as she sat nearby him on one of the destroyed and damaged chairs that looked like it had seen better days. In fact the whole place looked like it could've seen better days..
"I didn't even get a chance to know my father, I just happened to have his knack for working with technology that I got to be around it." Arno stated, giving a slight shrug since not knowing his father didn't really bother him more so than to know what happened to him. So far, he hadn't exactly found that answer since it seemed to lie with the government and SHIELD, and infiltrating their systems a second time would throw up a red flag. Which meant he had to give it time, and maybe over time he could learn it from Tony if they ever met again and Arno revealed his true identity rather than beating around the bush.
But his gaze briefly went to her tank top, not failing to miss the obvious red skull motif in the leather, which made his eyes widen in shock. "Red Skull...the Red Skull is your father? I hardly would find him much of a family man Miss Shmidt, if you go by his last name that is. Besides, why waste your time following in his shoes when you could maybe do things he never could accomplished." Arno pointed out, obviously seeming to find it nonsense that she was waiting the approval of a mad man, but maybe she could improve something. Maybe he could even twist this into her coming to a much lighter path, if maybe even an anti-hero rather than a villain. "And that whole winking and flirting thing isn't going to work. Contrary to popular belief not all men with a lot of money are easily swayed by a woman's charm." He snorted softly, less than impressed by the display of flirtation.
He merely moved closer to her side, pulling up a chair that was almost intact before sitting down. "Obviously they don't want a chance of firewalls, Trojan horses, or hidden viruses causing havoc on them." Arno pointed out before shaking his head. "Look, how about we work on one thing at a time, alright? Lets even start with perhaps proper introductions." Arno held out his hand to her, offering her a genuine smile, "My name is Arno Carbonell, what shall I call you?" He introduced.
"He isn't a family man." Sinthea said as she crossed her arms. "But I am daddy's girl he wants me to turn out like him, one day maybe even be the heir to Hydra. For now since he is missing I have to take up the legacy that is left and make sure the other hydra members know who's boss." Sinthea said as she gave one last look to some of the men who were working on getting some of the electricity flowing through the building like Arno had recommended. On occasions sparks flew through the area. "Some people can't change, Arno. It's like telling an old dog to learn new tricks." She pointed out. "Well then I guess I won't try it knowing you're a tough cookie." She added.
"My name is Sinthea Smidt, but while we're out fighting the so called heroic guys you may call me Sin." She pointed out knowing all of them had code names to protect their identities and she was no different."It's nice to meet you." She said but there was a bit of a hesitant tone on her as she looked at his hand. He wasn't hear to cause problems for Hydra, but he insisted on helping her and the poor hydra fools. She quickly brought out her hand to shake, and he'd probably be surprised to see that her hand shake was a tough one. Her father made sure that she would be strong, even if she was a human. Though some of the close family members might've suggested she had a tiny amount of trace bits of the super soldier serum in her. It was hard to say.
"Do what you believe is best to get this thing in the air. I will direct the men to listen to you. Right now they're trying to get electricity to run in this part of the craft." Sinthea said as she knew that the men would listen. If she had to get angry, which she wasn't afraid of she might do it to get them to work if things went badly. And with that she crossed her arms as she took her hand back and sat down on a broken chair, the chair still held her up, but she was careful to balance her weight on it.
She was one to call him a tough cookie. Sinthea herself was obviously a tough customer herself. The way she talked, her firmness in the beliefs of her father, the way she shook his hand, Arno knew he would have his work cut out for him in trying to change her mind, to maybe taking HYDRA a much different direction than it had been since the Second World War. "Sinthea, we don't have to turn out like our parents or be them. If you don't agree with Red Skull's ways than you shouldn't hesitate to change or make those changes. I mean face it, his methods didn't work." Arno pointed out, knowing he was treading in a dangerous spot right now, especially with the way he was talking about Red Skull.
But, facts were facts. "One of those "hero guys" would be me too." He sighed, obviously seeing he would have to set the record straight here and now before she got any thoughts that he was HYDRA's lapdog like so many others. "I am not one of HYDRA's soldiers, experiments, or guinea pigs Sinthea. The only thing HYDRA has any say with is their financial backing for my company, nothing more." The man stood from his seat, coming over to where he heard faint humming and pulled aside a panel that allowed him to get to one of the generators for the main control room. "I feel it necessary to reciprocate with those who offer some investment into my business, so a deal was struck that I would help HYDRA with only certain matters. Not with their obsessive need to dominate the world."
A few sparks arched off the tesla coil, causing Arno to wince, getting a small shock from it. Frowning, his hands became covered his his basic form of the exoskeleton and he began to work on the coils and wiring within, his hands better connected from the power supply. "I will guide your men as necessary, when they get the basic understanding of what needs to be done then they should be more than capable of handling their technology." Arno told her, his gaze never leaving his work.
"I don't always agree with my father the way he does things." Sinthea said as she put a hand on her hip knowing what the older man was trying to do here. "But if you can imagine Hydra is run like a dictatorship, dad is not meant to be questioned no matter how bad or how intelligent they might be. It's just the way things have been done and you can't change that." Sinthea said wondering herself how exactly she would get out of this. If she walked away from this the Red Skull would be knocking on her door any minute for angry revenge and a reunion she didn't exactly want. Not to mention there was the chance that SHIELD would probably put her behind bars and serve an enormous amount of time there. "If you do think I'd be able to get away from such a life, I have enemies, as do many have. My father would be after me, so would SHIELD, and other various so called heroic groups. Life would be no different." Sinthea said with a sigh knowing she had thought about it. But it would be a tough one. Heck she wouldn't even be able to start a family, not that she had much of a life of her own now.
Sinthea watched and listened to Arno as he spoke, it would make sense, Hydra needed the money to supply resources, not to mention the most recent project was right in front of them. Getting the Hydra base up and running again would be no easy task but it sure would be a great victory on their hands for Hydra. Her father would be proud, but there would be no time for resting and she was pretty sure the lackies knew that too. They had to find the Red Skull. If he was in SHIELD prison, hiding somewhere, she would make sure he would be found. "It makes sense why Hydra would want you, they make sure they have the finest of allies all across the globe, even more than once they have done alliances with members from outer space." Sinthea said not fully understanding why her father did that but heay some didn't understand the torn relationship that she had with him.
"Sounds good to me. You can do what you want they know about loyalty and will not question what you do." She gave them one last nasty look as they froze in fear knowing that Sinthea's looks usually meant something and she didn't have to speak. It was interesting how they obeyed here, but she knew they wouldn't fully listen unless the skull was here. If there were any signs of mutany or even rebelliousness, she'd make sure they were dealt with properly. Some were even killed for that type of thing.
Well, it had been worth a shot. Arno could see clearly Sinthea would not listen to anything he offered, possible ways in which he could help her completely change her life if she wanted to. He had done it for himself and was more than willing to give someone a chance, even someone related to the Red Skull despite everything else. He simply could only shake his head, "If you keep doubting everything beyond HYDRA Sinthea, your life will go no where. Trust me, I've known what it feels like to be trapped, to feel like you can't change your life. But when you get the courage to do so, it's quite an experience to feel free and able to do what you want, not life someone else's life you expect to life." Arno told her as he finished with the coils and other necessary connections, the humming sounding smoother and more promising.
He stepped back, closing the panel as the liquid metal returned into his form, turning back to face the red haired woman, "Once more, what we are doing is striking a business deal. I am not your ally, I am not your pawn, if you wanted that your organization should invest in small business. Everyone else seems interested in it." Arno said with a bit colder but firmer tone, making sure to drive home the fact he wasn't associated with HYDRA other than for business. He was offering consultations, volunteering, and giving his technology of which he was partly making sure were being purposed for what they were made for.
"I will direct them, nothing more Miss Schmidt. I can have a short quick meeting with you and your unit leaders or handle things with the unit leaders alone. After that is said and done I will be leaving unless the task seems too broad for your available staff. I cannot be in more than one place, and I still have a company to run." At this point, Arno was beginning to feel he had stayed far too long, overstayed his welcome as it were. It was becoming more difficult to keep his cool and not find some reason to point out facts and truths that would jeopardize funding and maybe make him a target for HYDRA rather than them leaving him and Los Angeles be.
"Very well then, continue on as you see fit." Sinthea said. "I'm sorry about what you said. Unfortunately Hydra's all I ever known about. My mother was dead after I was born and all I have ever known is the Red Skull and Hydra. If you think I'd be able to walk out in public SHIELD would no doubt have a bounty on my head just as they did with my father." Sinthea said. "And I'm not about to let that happen." Sinthea added knowing if she did step out things could get worse. Hydra would disband with no leader at their side, and she knew her father needed to be found with her dying breath. Something he would be eternally grateful for and he'd be owing her big time for taking care of Hydra and breaking her out.
"But if I find out there is more to this buisness deal you speak of, you'll get a personal invitation from me. And it won't be a pretty one." She said with a bit of a warning tone knowing she didn't like to play games. However she quickly dropped the conversation figuring that Arno would understand what she meant as she put her hand on her hips. Perhaps they could talk about something else. After all she had all the time in the world on her side as he worked and she directed the hydra soldiers.
"So Arno do you know anything about the Dark Avengers? I was almost considering an alliance with them one day." Sinthea explained. "That is of course they can prove themselves. I heard about what happened to the church and I'm not at all impressed." She explained as she picked up a peace of bent up metal that looked a bit strong for a woman her age. But she managed to pick it up no problem and handed it over to the soldier who seemed to know how to bend it and mold it back into shape. Perhaps they could figure out where it went and what it belonged too. It'd take a long time to comb through this mess, but she didn't seem to mind.
"If there is anything suspicious about our contract, talk to your businessmen. They approached me for this deal, not the other way around." Arno growled in response, finding himself becoming annoyed with the red haired woman for thinking he had anything to do with undermining her. Quite frankly, he could careless about HYDRA's way of handling politics and problems within their own hierarchy. He was first and foremost a businessman and inventor, a hero second, and a business partner third, which was why this deal had been low on his priority list and he wanted nothing to do with their criminal organization. Not all of it at least.
With a soft grumble, Arno began checking other parts of the controls, trying to calm himself down rather than dig his grave even more since he was technically at a disadvantage here. He could ask Alkhema to access his own tech, short out their systems for a small period of time but he was also outnumbered, which would give him little time to react. So, Arno tried to focus on making some minor repairs, faintly listening to Sinthea. "I've heard they were a problem in the past, but some new young villain wanna-bes have taken the mantle." Arno said with a shrug, having to pull out some destroyed and fried gear boxes, circuits, and wires...until that last part made him stiffen and drop what was in his hand.
"They attacked my brother's wedding?!" He said in shock, not even thinking about what he had just said. He had been there earlier, to see in on the happy ceremony, but Arno never imagined the place would be attacked! These days the villains, much like HYDRA, had been on the down low, working to rebuild their strength but he never imagined they would have the bravado to make such an attack with so few members. There was a million thoughts racing through his mind and working on the HYDRA Fortress was now the last thing on his mind.
He mentally sent some signals to the liquid armor within his being, the metal secreting from his body and encasing him almost like a metallic, liquid cocoon before forming into his Iron Guardian armor. "Worry about your own things right now Schmidt, you've just brought up a matter that is much more important than getting this hunk of junk to fly." Arno said, his tone having lost its coldness but seemed more edged with concern and rage towards the Dark Avengers for what they had caused for his family.
