"Am I getting to old for this job?" Tony had to ask himself that question as he found himself pinned against the nearby wall as several blasters had nearly hit him. He was ducking underenath one of the large rock formations that had been created by a hologram. It was pretty realistic as far as he was concerned but he knew once that paint touched his armor he was pretty much a goner as far as he was concerned. He ducked again as he heard Jacosta warn him on his radar that one of the weapons was firing. Red paint splattered on the wall and it would've been a very close shot.
"Maybe I'm just thinking too much." He said to himself as he opened fire getting fed up by these firing like cannon machines. Using his repulsors they lit up like a light blue object as he fired the weapons straight at the machines. Then they blew to pieces before his eyes as he seemed satisfied with the job that they had done here.
"Jacosta turn off the training session I think that's enough for one day." Tony said as he lifted up his face mask as he rubbed the sweat off of his cheek.
"Powering down training session," Jacosta said. "Your score was 90 out of 100 machines, not bad Mister Stark. However Captain America still holds the record."
"Figures that guy is pretty much perfection wherever he goes." Tony said as he brushed some of the dirt off of his armor. "I'd still consider that an A as far as I'm concerned." Tony added knowing a few training sessions were in order for some of the younger members of the Avengers when they arrived. So far he hadn't seen any of them but he figured he'd call it quits early so things could be cleaned up. And the worst part was cleaning up after Hulk, he wasn't going to enjoy that, that was usually left as a grounded job for someone who got into trouble.
One of those younger Avengers though was there to see Tony's training session. James sat on the viewing platform of the training room, legs dangling off the edge as he watched Tony closely as he trained. He had only been there for a good thirty minutes and had almost been tempted to jump into the fray since there was a time or two Tony seemed to have some problems but the older Avenger would pull through. James had to hand it to the old man, he was tough, or just really stubborn, even for something that was a simulation.
His eyes followed Tony's movements, occasionally letting that gaze briefly go towards a cannon or turret that popped up then back to Tony. After what seemed like hours Tony finally decided to end the session and James saw his chance to drop down form the platform, "My father? Perfection? You sure you don't have him mixed up with me Mr.Stark?" James spoke up in amusement, the young man strolling over to the armored Avenger, casting his gaze to the wreckage of turrets which was slowly getting cleaned up or self-repairing itself. "Maybe you just need better calculations. Or use that brain of yours to actually, you know, strategize." He pointed out, wondering if Tony went in with a strategy to begin with. Though at the moment he knew better then to completely push the envelope.
James pressed a button on the side of his gauntlet then, extending the energy shield that resembled his father's, "Maybe I should take over for a while, give you a break. Looks like you were running yourself pretty ragged towards the end." He offered, seeing Tony could use a break after that final stretch. He didn't think the Avenger couldn't handle another session but everyone had their limits and well...Tony wasn't as young as he once was.
"Believe it or not, James I knew two different Captain Americas, the one in my time was a great hero even honored to this day. And there's also the one in this time who is pretty much the same." Tony said knowing James and others probably found it hard to believe that Tony was from a different time. The Extremis Virus was almost unheard of in this realm but Tony had almost considered it a curse while he was here, it simply wasn't fair that he had it. Although it did give him a handful of benefits like living much longer and being able to use some temporary fire abilities to heat things up.
"But yeah I could use a break I've been here for several hours. Back then I never really got a chance to practice anything...or do much of anything." Tony said not really interested in telling James what happened in the Ultron verse. It was far too painful for him still to try and even mention it. There were a few handful that knew that what had happened to him in that time and Jamie was one of them since she was one of the first that he met in this time.
"But go ahead you'll enjoy the simulations I had a few new ones set up the last couple of days in case you want to try, and for a warning they aren't going to be easy ones." He said knowing any super hero liked a challenge. He was curious to see how James would do as he stepped out of the arena to let James take a look at it. His Ironman suit had changed into his suit case form as he held it in his hand. "He's all yours." He said as he sat down and took out a water bottle that they had a decent supply of drinks in case anyone got worn out or needed something to rest with.
"Yea, yea, patriot to the end, hero of the people, a simple American turned the most perfect human specimen. I've heard the stories more than enough times." James waved a hand dismissively, as if uninterested in hearing something he had heard many times in his short life. HYDRA had never shut up about his father nor the Avengers, much less making their own perfect specimen. He heard tales, watched the many old history logs, and received very similar training and then some. Quite frankly, it got tiring hearing such things over and over again.
But, he did pause to peer at Tony in a curious expression at hearing that. He had heard the talk of where this Tony came from, and the only thing that ever remained consistent was it hadn't been a time of paradise. And despite James being the vocal type he was smart enough not to pry into such matters. It was obvious Tony guarded such information closely and didn't just give it out without reason or probable concerns. "Guess I'm fortunate enough to take after my genetic mother more than my genetic father." James remarked, almost having a slight mock to the name of Steve Rogers.
He knew when others caught wind of who he really was, well most of who he really was, there was nothing but judgemental looks and pressing questions. Even now James balked at someone comparing him to Captain America, having a goal to refute the comparisons. "I will take a look." He add in reference to the simulations, coming over to the console to take a look, rubbing his chin in thought for a moment.
Once he felt like he had an idea, he began messing with the controls to adjust the simulation as he wanted. "Sorry if this simulation kinda startles you Tony, I'm a little use to going...big with challenges." James told him as he moved towards the middle of the room which flickered to become a war-torn battle field one might see in World War II and three large HDYRA-styled robots pushing up from the ground.
Tony had thought long and hard on this. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not telling James what happened. He got the honored hero part right but that wasn't all of it. Steve like many other heroes had died valiantly while Ultron attacked. Attacking Steve was pretty much anbattack on not only the Avengers but also on America. Ultron was a calculating killer and had no need for human emotions. Finally he decided that they needed to know.
"That isn't all of it." Said Tony as he looked back as James was working on the simulation and Hydra boots appeared in holograms. "Steve in my time was one of the first heroes to be killed by a super ai robot known as Ultron. Ultron knew the impact Steve had and it pretty much shattered the Avengers overnight. A lot of what you're familiar with is gone in my time. It looks like an apocalypse." Said Tony.
"Well you don't need to hear me ramble on." Tony added. "Carry on with your mission and maybe this old timer can give you some feed back. If you really want it that is." The older avenger said as he sat down on a bench slmost as if a signal for James to begin.
"I don't mean to sound disrespectful Tony, but in times of war such loss will happen. I am sorry for all your losses, what you went through...but this is a different time, different place, and things won't be like they were where you are from." James told him, glaring towards the first HYDRA robot that extended a several metal tentacle legs towards him but were mostly deflected by the energy shield before he dove towards the right. His body rolled and he was back on his feet, aiming the gauntlet and firing several energy blasts from it to pelt the outside.
It was enough to cause the first robot to move back before the second swiped one of its legs and caught him on the side. James grunted slightly as he was sent flying, landing hard on his back but quickly recovering as he felt the simulated robots stomping towards him. "More realistic than I was expecting." James admitted, swinging his arm back and forth to send four different energy generated shields to slice through their hulls and tearing off some of the robotic limbs, causing oil to splatter and wires to spark at random. They may have been realistic but that didn't mean he was about to take this as anything of a game. Well, not totally like a game as he got back onto his feet.
"You know Tony, think making them so realistic certainly is an accomplishment. I'd almost think they're the real things." James commented, charging towards the second HYDRA bot as it lashed out with a good limb but he pushed off the ground to not only dodge it but landing right on top of it. His extra weight briefly slowed it but not for long before it whipped back to its owner and allowing James the momentum to leap right for the skull face on the main hull of the tank-like robot. Despite this though, he had to dig his fingers into it, leaving small dents from his strength when he felt himself beginning to slip but managing to scramble onto the roof just seconds before another limb lashed out, this time from the third robot that had picked up on the attacker.
"You've got a good point there, James I came here half unexpectedly. You see I was hoping to go back in time to fix things but instead I accidently found myself in a different dimension. I sure am glad that I was able to at least start over again." Tony added as he really wasn't sure that he wanted to join the Avengers at first. Then over time with the help of Jamie he was able to sort things out and join. Tony watched for a bit as he paused and let James take over for the training room. The robot was merciless, as he expected and flung James into a wall as he winced a bit and could relate, the armor couldn't always protect him from everything coming his way.
"Well it always helps having a realistic simulation gets you prepared out there for the future." Tony said as he crossed his arms. He seemed to be impressed at how James managed to recover from the inncident without much of a problem which was good on his hands.
"There are of course human aspects that the simulator can't take over like death or someone dying, that is something that you will always encounter in the real world." Tony admitted knowing the loss of many had been a painful one. He knew the young avengers were ready for things that would come, but were they really ready for loosing loved ones? They had many close scares, and even Hawkeye had done as much to try and keep his family off the map to keep them safe which Tony understood why he had done that. Still James seemed like his father, even if he didn't want to admit it or even openly say it to when it came to combat. "Not bad, James, not bad at all." Tony said as he seemed impressed by his skills at this point in time. Though the simulation would be a long one still and they had a long way to go with it.
“Always good to have a fresh start when things seem so dark and bleak.” James agreed, having had his fair share of unsavory past encounters, especially when it came to HYDRA. He had been their guinea pig, a way to create a new super soldier where the plans had failed with Red Skull or taking down Captain America in some way. It was why he always preferred them in some kind of simulation, as a way to get back at those years of abuse in which he was returning the favor in simulated reality, keeping a hold of one of the robotic tanks which was beating itself and getting a beating from its companions while James would raise his shield to deflect cannon fire or send the shield at one of the limbs to slowly tear through the hulls.
But, as he was striking through the hull of the tank he was on he failed to take into account the third tank’s final limb which snaked up behind him, sparking with energy and slamming into his back. A shocked scream came from the young Rogers, causing him to tumble off and land onto the ground with a loud thud. His body sparked on occasion from the energy, and he grunted as he was being pummeled by the robots, slowly crawling to one of the fallen cannons that seemed to still function. James expanded the shield to protect his body from further harm as he grabbed the gun, feeling it was still hot and propped it against his body as he turned on his back, “Eat plasma you overgrown tincans!” James snarled as he fired the cannon manually, tearing through what remained of the robots that crashed to the ground before dropping the cannon seconds before the simulation ended, leaving the young James panting heavily and needing a moment to get his bearings.
"Of course, you do have some bits of wisdom in you, James even if you don't like being compared to your father." Tony said. "And I know how that feels. I had a lot of pressure on me from my own father when he was around. But I hardly saw him since he was so indulged with his work, he was hardly around, didn't' exactly get the father of the year award." Tony said with a sigh knowing he had one or two family portraits that hadn't been destroyed by Ultron while he was around. It was still in his room on his nightstand when he went to bed.
While Tony had been muddling in about his past he couldn't help but notice Jame's aggressiveness. Perhaps it was needed in this case as James went up and smashed them with their own canons, talk about using their own weapons agaist them and finally the last robot fell before them in a smashed bits of metal. It was hardly recognizeable as far as Tony could tell. "Not bad James, you fell only once or twice and recovered only a handful of times in fights." Tony said. "Though I hope it's alright if I change things a bit, maybe you can get a taste of what I experienced while I was in the Ultronverse and it was nothing good." tony said as he went over towards the control panel if James was up for it. If he wasn't he would simply turn it off, but he knew that there was possibly going to be a time when they'd have to deal with Ultron and it was always on the back of his mind. Always a worry. Always a fear.
James didn't exactly seem to acknowledge much to the dad bit. Honestly, he really didn't want to think of his genetic father much, especially when he felt comparing himself to Steve Rogers was like comparing apples to oranges. Perhaps they shared some similarities, but there were also far more differences. He was more inclined to think he was more like Natasha than his own father. In all honesty, he was more than happy to ignore it, acting like he hadn't entirely heard everything Tony said. "Guess some fathers are like that." Came his simple response.
He still lied there on the ground, pondering of actually taking part in another session. He was a bit tired but his body still felt alright. He felt a slight urge of adrenaline still coursing through his body, an indication that maybe he could take another session. "I can handle one more." James finally responded, pushing himself up with a soft grunt, dusting off his hands but feeling the ache in his body from the beat down he got. "I'm definitely going to be sore after all this." He grumbled.
