It was a nice Saturday night, not too hot and not too cold as the older Nova flew over the city as he watched the humans as they continued about their business down below. It was hard to believe that some of them had flying cars now-it kind of put his own flying abilities to shame sometimes. However, if you asked him SHIELD had the best state of the art stuff from what he had seen. They had helped develop a lot of things that were out on the market and sometimes SHIELD members got first looks at the technology that they were working on and it sure was something.
"Well, no one is able to beat the flying super hero any day that's for sure." He said with a chuckle. As usual Sam was a bit of show off even at this age. Even if he had matured a bit and looked more grown up he loved to show off his powers towards anyone that he could try and show it too. Quickly while he got the chance, he flew forward leaving a blue blur behind him from his Nova Force. Someone down below probably noticed the blue blur that had been left, it probably looked like a bright light in the sky. He hoped it didn't startle anyone but regardless, another side of him thought it was funny.
"I wonder how the others are doing, I haven't seen anyone recently on SHIELD. I suppose it makes it a tough life to handle sometimes." Sam thought to himself, before he came to a stop and began to rest. He didn't exactly want to try and over exhaust himself while he was out on a flight.
The young man stopped for a bit as he hovered in place as he seemed to be reminiscing about what the older Nova had said. He hadn't seen Rider in awhile but what the older Nova had taught him sure had helped him while he was learning about the Nova Force. He knew that there was probably still a lot that he hadn't learned just yet, and he was wondering what had happened to his father. Was his father out in space? He thought for sure that he would've found him by now if he was on Earth. That made him frown since he hadn't seen heads or tails of him any were. "Where are you, dad? I'll make sure you're found dead or alive...I hope more so, for the alive part." He thought, as he looked up at the sky and saw the moon. It did make him grin a bit as he recalled his last attempt to fly to the moon and back, that sure had been an interesting trip even if it was only for an hour or so. It hadn't occurred once to Sam that someone might've been watching him but he didn't mind all that much for curious on lookers.
With it being a weekend, Anya found herself not needed at the gymnasium for practice and so far nothing out of the ordinary had happened in terms of criminals or super villains. It seemed despite the growing concerns of crime becoming a major concern once more things were not as bad as they once were before and that meant some breaks in between. Seeming as it was the weekend it also seemed a good time as any to get some fresh air or at the very least a little walk while she had some time to herself. Then again, she had a lot of that these days, some days of which she found depressing and in need of distractions to keep grief from setting in.
She sighed softly as such thoughts did invade her mind, bringing back the memories of being unable to save those dearest to her. The Sisterhood of the Wasp had been beaten back yet again, and it may be years yet before they would make their faces known, but that didn't stop the flood of rage and guilt plaguing the young woman. Shaking her head, Anya turned her eyes towards the sky expecting to see the light filled night sky but instead she was greeted with the appearance of a blue streak going across the sky. Though she would have wished it was a shooting star, she recognized the color of the Nova Force, which meant it might only be one person: a Nova. Was it the Nova she knew so well? She couldn't say for sure but it was something to investigate.
Slipping to the darkness of an alley, Anya quickly changed from her civilian clothes into those of her new Arana outfit and placed her bag in a hidden spot. She then began to climb her way up the building, glancing every so often to see if she saw another blue streak, but the one she had seen was beginning to fade by now and there was no telling if the Nova person was gone. It took time, but she finally got to the roof, pulling herself up and keeping her palms pressed to the metallic surface to prevent from falling. She had excellent balance but one wrong step could mean a nasty slip that could prove difficult to correct herself from.
Anya scanned the skies for the familiar blue, finally spotting someone hovering in place. It was definitely a Nova but there was still no saying for sure if it was Sam himself. And there was only one way to find out, reaching up to her face mask to press a button that had a built-in com link, making a connection to the familiar channel. "Alexander?" She inquired cautiously.
Sam had been semi aware that his bright blue form could probably be seen through the air while others may just consider him to be a bright star-though these days you were really lucky if you could see stars over New York City. There was too much light pollution, so you might as well forget about seeing the stars. You'd have to go somewhere remote. Sam remembered watching the stars at his house when he was a teenager, and his sister Kayleen always asked which star was Xandar, Sam barely knew the answer to that one, he didn't have an answer. He knew his father would've had a better one than he did.
As Sam seemed to be lost in his own thoughts, a bit of a light blue blip appeared on the hub of his Nova helmet and that surprised him. Was there someone he knew nearby? The helmet had data of a lot of the super heroes that he had come to meet and it sure was helpful in case he had forgotten. However a voice came through that only confirmed his thoughts, "Anya? Pinch me am I dreaming? I'll be down in a second i see you on my helmet so don't move." He said as he flew down in a rather bit of a hurry as he saw where Anya was. Despite possible worry that she might have, Sam was actually really happy to see Anya again since it had been awhile.
"Anya!" He said as he went in and pretty much bear hugged her at this rate. After realizing he might be hurting her with his strength he let her go, "Sorry about that...That may have been a bit sudden of an impulse on my part." He said as he let go and backed away a bit to give her some space. "Nice suit by the way, I like it. I haven't changed much with mine though...maybe grown a few inches but that's about it." He said trying to find things they could talk about. He couldn't help it but be excited, however a bit of him wondered if Anya was here on serious business...
The response she got did surprise Anya somewhat, knowing the Novas were a police force so it was possible it could have been someone else. And honestly, part of Anya had been hoping it was someone else since she was reluctant to reconnect with old friends after her resignation. Her meeting with Kaine had made it clear some of them wouldn't be entirely happy with her, although that meeting had gone better than she expected.
Though before she could reply, Sam was already coming right for her and Anya's eyes widened as he gave her a sudden bear hug, causing her to loose her grip on the metal briefly, "Good to see you too Sam." Anya greeted, patting his back with what little of herself she could gather again before he let go. "Sudden is putting a little mildly Sam. Lucky for you I'm not a regular human." She took a moment to catch her breathe since she realized Sam knocked a bit of the wind out of her lungs from the suddenness, much less realizing his strength was a bit more than she remembered. Obviously the past four years were not spent without training on his part, most likely from SHIELD putting the Nova through the wringer and never really throwing them much of a bone or slack in the reins as it were.
She carefully straightened herself before she simply nodded, "Definitely look the same as always Sam, just as easily excited too." Anya agreed with a faint smile, giving her outfit a glance. "Guess I would fit that espionage role if I had stuck around huh?"
"Yeah, I think I have learned a thing or two like not to wander off so often like I used to." Sam said knowing that the last few years had changed him a bit. He had probably matured a bit too which Anya would take notice. However he was still the same Sam Alexander she know from when they first started. His eagerness didn't really fade all that much, but he was a bit wiser than jumping into fights that he couldn't handle. "Yes I'd say you'd work as a spy with that dark colored suit of yours." Sam agreed with a soft nod in agreement as they spoke up.
"These days SHIELD really hasn't had many assignments, they have enough around that I can take days off without them noticing that I'm gone." Sam said with a shrug. "But I am a bit worried, there have been rumors that some darker teams are showing up all over the place." He added with a shrug. Until they showed themselves, they were just that rumors. They would never know until they started to act and caused some crime. However, Sam was ready and he hoped Anya and the others would be too.
"Say you should visit my home in New York one of these days, I have an apartment there now since SHIELD visits that area a lot and it's a great way to spend time off of them." He added. Even to this day Sam wasn't thrilled with the idea of being boxed up all the time. With his helmet, he was used to flying around at high speeds, and it often was very limiting with all the corners and mazes that were there. However Sam fell silent, in case Anya wanted to talk realizing he might've been talking too much. However who could blame him? He was excited to see an old friend again and that's what mattered, and it's clear he had forgiven Anya, as much as she may have feared it. "Sorry if I'm talking too much." He added. "I guess I'm just excited, as always."
"Doesn't surprise me, training often can do wonders in learning things about what you can and cannot do." Anya agreed, having gone through something similar earlier in her heroic career. She had discovered she wasn't meant to be the Hunter for the Spider Society through her many sessions of training and studying, having noticed how they seemed skeptical and confused about her carapace. So, she had gone through more than enough trials and errors to know what her powers could do, although in this case she was just out of practice.
Well, that wasn't too surprising. With so much peace in the world it was a wonder why heroes were still around anymore, but it was times like with the two thugs she chased down earlier that week and when she ran into Kaine had more than proven why heroes were still needed. "SHIELD will always be like they are Sam, just be glad you got better at making it less noticeable that you were MIA." Anya told him, knowing he had done that many a time in their youth and occasionally did so when she was still with SHIELD and the Web Warriors. "But I wouldn't count on SHIELD giving you too much slack even as a more veteran agent now. They did that they wouldn't have much for discipline on their part." She mused, knowing just how Nick Fury and many of the superiors could be.
His suggestion of visiting his apartment though did make her pause for a moment, almost taking up such an offer. It's not like he was asking her to visit SHIELD itself, compared to Kaine's suggesting she visit the Web Warriors. It was something she didn't seem so keen on and had told him she would think on it. This was entirely different, hopefully. "So long as SHIELD or anyone else isn't there, maybe I'll visit Sam." Anya finally answered, giving a soft smile towards him. Even now her guard was a little more lax, having gotten to know Sam a lot more than most of the Web Warriors, but she did still consider them family.
Pushing herself up to stand straight, Anya moved closer to Sam and placed a hand on the exposed part of his cheek, "Just promise me you won't try to show off with the helmet on inside a small space again. Last few times you've done that didn't end so well." She said with a small smile, a faint hint of amusement present, "But you're more than welcome to visit my apartment in Brooklyn too if you want. I'm handling things in my own area for now, the team thing isn't really my cup of tea right now."
"Of course, SHIELD doesn't bother me there, though I haven't visited it in a couple of months, I hope it hasn't collected dust or anything." He said with a bit of a half hearted chuckle, knowing cleaning up after messes wasn't exactly his thing. In fact he hated it when SHIELD did it to try and discipline the young trainees. Suppose if he were on Xandar right now things would've been no different for him if he went into the Nova Force.
"And I won't use my powers." Sam said. "I know I tried that on the hellicarrier...and they weren't exactly happy with that. I left a dent the size of a horse in one of the metal plating." he admitted. It may have been a bit of an exaggeration on how big the dent was but it sure was big in his opinion from it. It took several agents almost a few days to get the kinks out of it. Nova looked up as he heard Anya speak up about visiting her in Brooklyn, that would be a small change from what he was used to but he'd like the idea of that just to get away from everything. "I'd like that, Anya. Flying there shouldn't be a problem it should be about 10 minutes, where as a car would make it probably....an hour with New York traffic." He said knowing some things hadn't changed here at all even if there were signs of flying cars. One thing that Sam hadn't noticed that Anya was avoiding SHIELD just yet, when he did find out he may end up asking her why, as long as she was alright with it.
"Anya why is it that you don't like being apart of the team just yet? I understand if the answer is personal. You seemed to have a lot of fun with the Web warriors...well When they weren't bickering or tearing their heads off...I think I was a bit jealous at first too." Sam admitted knowing that may have sounded a bit surprising. Seeing that there weren't too many Novas out there, it would've been hard to come up with a team full of Novas. He hadn't seen Rider in a long time, but the older Nova sure did tell him a lot with their few encounters.
"I understand if you don't want to talk." He said adding it with another nod as he looked up at the sky. It was as if something was still troubling him. It was the fact that it had been ten years since he started with SHIELD and so far there was no sight of his father. Was he still alive? No he couldn't give up. Rider had said that his father was from their earlier encounters, and he had to hang onto that little bit of faith that he had.
Well, some things certainly didn't change when it came to her friends. Kaine was still the brooding, tough guy who preferred the loner bit while Sam was still something of a show boat and risk taker. It was almost a nostalgic feeling when she was speaking with the two men respectively, and it felt just like yesterday she was speaking to each, in this case with Sam by chance and them discovering the atlas he had hidden in his helmet. Despite Anya not wanting to admit it such things brought some comfort to the young woman, almost like a personal reassurance that not everything had changed despite the passing of time and many things happening since she left.
"Still the same deep down." She chuckled, a ghost of a grin showing on her face like she once had plastered on her face so often in her youth. It was almost foreign to be grinning, smiling, laughing...it had become alien and something of the past for Anya. She almost allowed the grin to disappear but tried to keep it, not wanting to worry Sam more than he probably already had been since that day. But it did wind up disappearing nonetheless when he asked the question she had been dreading for four long years. She looked away for a moment, trying to ponder an answer that wouldn't wind up sounding like she was a total jerk and had simply abandoned them out of the blue. Well, it was technically what she did to a point but she didn't want to cause tension when Sam had none before.
She glanced back at the young Nova, seeing he seemed lost in thought elsewhere as well and she could imagine he was maybe thinking of his lost father. "Because I did something bad Sam, bad enough I couldn't forgive myself and felt too ashamed to show my face around SHIELD." Anya finally answered, her tone dark and serious, closing her eyes for a moment as she imagined those moments which made her clench her fists. She knew him and others would have tried to look past it, tell her they had her back and would support her, but she had needed that time away, to ponder of what she wanted to do with her life when such a failure weighed so heavily on her conscience like an anvil that couldn't be removed.
Though she was surprised to find Sam had been jealous. "Why would you be jealous of the Web Warriors? I hung out with you as often as I was working with them Sam." Anya asked, confusion replacing the darkness her look had shown previously.

"I am Sorry Anya, I didn't know." He apologized and his excitement changed and a frown appeared on his face. Only it changed until Anya appeared more upbeat again. Perhaps it was better to drop the subject. The past was the past. Even Sam had made mistakes before, however Anya didn't want to talk about it. "You are still my friend and that hasn't changed." Said Sam but he felt like she knew this by now. They had been trainees for a long time and he felt comfortable around Anya. "And I won't show off infront of you either." Sam added. He knew better than that to do it in an enclosed space. He miht as well crack his head open.
"Well," Sam paused a bit as he was trying to find the right answer for Anya. He thought it was probably a lame one. Back then Sam had been competitive with many other SHIELD agents and the Web Warriors were no different to him. He liked the idea that they had gone on so many interesting adventures and weren't boxed up in the hellicarrier all day. "I guess I was really competitive back then, always fighting for first place and the adventures and missions you went on were pretty cool. I think I had to beg the older agents just to go to New York." Sam admitted to Anya.
And he knew the issue of his father was still hanging over his head. Sam had come to one conclusion that he might not be on Earth at all. They would have found him by now. "Also on a different topic I have begun to wonder a lot about my dad... If we haven't found him by now he mustn't be on Earth." Said Sam although Anya couldn't see it, his atlas in his helmet appeared and displayed the thousands of stars as he pointed at Saturn. At least the direction of it. "One clue he did give me was he might've bern on Saturn."
"The only reason we got to go anywhere was because we had a field leader who was pretty much open for being away from SHIELD often. He didn't exactly hold a love for SHIELD after his own experiences." Anya explained, having never realized that Sam may not be fully aware of why the team was gone so often or took so many strange, dangerous missions. Hybrid hadn't exactly been keen on sticking to the Helicarrier and always seemed to watch the available missions. The moment one seemed remotely interesting or caught his eye the mixed Symbiote would swipe it and they would be off again.
She merely gave a slight smile at recalling how often she hadn't been able to spend with family and other friends, but enjoyed those times. Times she wished had lasted forever after all was said and done now. But she became solemn again as Sam spoke of what was on his mind, her hunch being proven right when he mentioned still worrying about his dad. She felt for Sam more than ever with having lost her father entirely and could only imagine the frustration the Nova was gong through. At least there was a chance his father might be alive.
Without thinking, Anya embraced Sam in a tight hug, her own strength clear behind it but not nearly as crushing as Sam's had been minutes before. "Then you need to go there Sam. If there is any chance your father is alive or there is a clue, you have to take it and not care what SHIELD says." Anya told him in a serious tone, meeting his gaze as she lifted her head to look at him but not letting go quite yet. "Family is far too important to not see that they might be around. And you've suffered enough with worrying all the time and letting SHIELD keep a tight leash." She encouraged, trying to get Sam to see the importance in going.
"Well, that makes a lot of sense then." Sam admitted knowing Hybrid wasn't the only one who wasn't fond of SHIELD. Rider had told him to always watch his back on SHIELD and so far the advice had been a decent thing to hold onto. The older Nova had taught him so much despite only being around for a handful of times, explained many things that Sam had questions too and most of it he had learned on his own-like accidently opening the atlas without knowing how he did it in the first place.
That was when an idea popped into his head, he wasn't sure how Anya would take it, but if she decided to say no, then he understood. Sometimes the trip wasn't always a good idea for others. Before he could speak, Anya gave him a hug which he embraced with his arms around her and didn't budge. His breathing was slow and calm but his mind was thinking what seemed like a mile a minute. So many things to do and so little time to explain it all to her. "Anya I know this is another crazy idea of mine, but what would you think of coming with me to Saturn?" Sam asked. "Of course we'd have to find some way so you can breathe out in outer space but that shouldn't be too hard." He said.
"The reason why I think my father is on Saturn is a story he used to tell me and my sister...I didn't believe him back then and I feel foolish for not doing anything." Sam admitted knowing his relationship hadn't been so good with his father. However he knew their relationship should be patched up and maybe even get off on a better one than what it had been. Sam wanted to find his father so bad, and the news from Rider had given him hope was something that he still hung on to as he watched Anya. And she was being a big help too.
Anya was actually surprised by the sudden request, giving Sam a shocked expression that he would consider asking her of all people. She knew Sam had a fascination with going into space, sometimes just to go and other times trying to find traces of his father. Though she could commend him for trying to find him she wasn’t entirely sure of what help she could be. Space had never been something she was immediately interested in, for some obvious reasons and one he pointed out. To be able to go would be amazing but at the same time she knew there would only be one way she would be going at all, much less where they’d get the technology to do so.
“Sam I…” She hesitated, letting him go as she stepped back, shaking her head, “I’m sorry Sam but I wouldn’t be much use in space. That’s more your territory, and besides being able to even get someone like me up there would require technology from a place like SHIELD.” Anya pointed out, making it quite clear she had no plans in returning to SHIELD any time soon. That is not without real cause or convincing. She left the organization in shame and felt it was better others did not see her or the wreck she had turned into anymore. In fact, that was how Anya felt anymore-a wreck of a person who seemed more along the lines of what Scarlet Spider was like now.

"It's alright, Anya I understand." Sam said with a soft nod towards Anya as he listened to her. There were probably other ideas for him to get into space and he just had to think about it. Going alone may have been an option he was old enough where he didn't need a leash from SHIELD then again he would get yelled at when he came back. "You know I heard of a group of people out in space called the Guardians of the Galaxy, I never actually met them but they may be a way to help me get into space...with some convincing of course." Sam said with a soft chuckle knowing his own times in space had been a bit brief like going to the moon and back just to see what he could do.
"You know it was odd, last time I went to the moon and back, you really do get a different perspective of everything." He said dropping the subject just a bit. "Earth looks really different, almost alone all the way out there in space floating around and everything you've ever owned, loved, and care about is on that planet." Sam said. "But that of course gives us another reason to try and defend it and make sure this peace stays." He said. "I hope I didn't frighten you with that kind of talk it's another thing that I've been thinking about lately." He admitted as he looked back at Anya. Once again things had gotten awkward between the two of them. And he felt himself feeling nervous, he always liked Anya as a friend and that bothered him that he was feeling this way...Then a thought came to him...Did he like Anya more than a friend? Did he in fact...love her? No way that was a bit....Er strange for him.
"Guardians huh? Wouldn't hurt to try and maybe talk to them Sam. Maybe you'll get a lead about your dad." Anya suggested, wondering if maybe there was a chance this outer space team had met more Novas or happened upon former members of it. It would be better than nothing that was for sure. But she couldn't help smiling as Sam started going into detail what it was like to fly in space, having not heard him this excited in quite some time. SHIELD didn't exactly make it easy to be happy about things and sometimes those bursts of enjoying something really helped.
Shaking her head, smile never fading she spoke once more, "Sounds like quite an adventure Sam, maybe next time you go some pictures might be nice." Anya pointed out, perhaps as a way for Sam to better share his adventures. Though the more he talked about it the more it made Anya uncomfortable, maybe in more ways than one. She had very little left to defend anymore, much of her motivation completely shattered from four years ago and she couldn't help looking away. "I suppose it would be worth defending if you had anything worth fighting for anymore." Anya said, tone flat and somewhat bitter, but it was towards herself as she moved away to stand at the corner of the roof, looking down at New York.
Her thoughts seem completely consumed by grief rather than the awkward feeling she had started to feel, resting her hands on her hips as she looked down at her home. "Is Earth really worth saving anymore? For all our heroics, it barely seems to change a thing."
"Yeah I've been trying to figure out ways to get there, SHIELD would probably give me heck if I went there by myself, but it may lead to that if the Guardians say no." Sam said knowing he could handle many SHIELD missions on his own now or even with other ones in group too. "I'll be sure to get some photos, Anya probably better than the ones that we get from the space program and all." He added with a soft nod.
"I think earth is worth saving, Anya." Sam admitted. "There will always be that good versus evil line if you ask me. Some how I've got a feeling a lot of bad guys are hiding in plain sight or hiding really well and are waiting to strike at the last minute. The Avengers were successful at doing that and saving the world. We're no different." Sam said. "Besides a part of the Nova force duty is saving the world too." Sam added however he still remembered what Rider had told him and he wasn't about to put this on Anya. For now he was familiar with the warning that came with it, there would be bad people out there who would kill Nova Force members and everything they stood for.
Sam did notice the awkwardness that had started to grow a bit as he floated not far from here and soon he turned his body upside down like how Spider Man would. "Say Anya is everything alright? I heard someone say if you look at people from different angles helped but I don't see anything different looking at you this way." He said at least trying to make her laugh. Then the words he couldn't help but blurt them out, "You look very pretty this way too." He said stopping himself dead in his tracks. Did he really mean it? It sounded like he did. Oops that wasn't supposed to come out.
