Monomachiarum
the story
Many civilizations have looked to the stars as a sign of hope. A beacon of promise.
Known as the "final frontier," space has been the place where many daydreams and great epics have taken place. At least, in terms of those who have imagined a world beyond theirs and haven't had the opportunity to advance beyond the constraints of what they know. Once those who had been bound to their planets started to leave, they quickly learned that they were not alone in the galaxy. Let alone in the universe--they realized that there was so much more than what they even thought that they knew.
Each civilization and society raced to become the dominant face in this fast-changing environment. Some had spent centuries traveling the cosmos already and others were just getting started. Many wars were fought, many discoveries were made, and many new planets were colonized. However, it was decided that there needed to be a way to keep the peace. The Intergalactic Trade Federation formed, inviting all planets and systems to join them in a show of solidarity and giving all under their wing a chance to come together. The Federation later became nicknamed 'The Alliance' because it created many allies among the celestial superpowers and the planets that were just starting out on this journey.
This peace, however, came at a price.
Certain planets, certain areas and certain civilizations were excluded from this newfound alliance. Many were left in the dark at a time when they needed help the most. This 'peace,' to many who were beyond the comforts of the Alliance, seemed like it was more self-serving than anything else. Perhaps this partnership among the hundreds of systems that considered themselves Allies was just a power grab for resources and territories. It was in this shadow cast by the Alliance that a group known as The League quietly rose to power. A mysterious leader united those that had been left behind and spent much time in the shadows building a military as well as forming their own alliance began. They captured territories and began driving Alliance ships out of what they believed was theirs.
Thus, a new war began.
Many in the Alliance wanted to doubt the existence of The League for a long time. They wanted to believe that they lived in peace, and that those speaking out were simply unaware of the truth. This has begun to cause trouble for the once perfectly oiled machine. Many aren't sure what to make of what they see.
What they don't know as this uprising is only the beginning of what is to come.
However, this isn't a battle between good and evil anymore. There are others involved in this fight, those who don't necessarily believe one or the other is right.
The Pacifists, otherwise known as the neutrals have tried their best to avoid conflict however they can. It is the nature of the beast and they have decided it's easier to shut both doors instead of picking one versus the other. Many other systems who are afraid of what full-scale war would do have decided to follow suit. But will their method of handling this be effective?
The Mercenaries are a band of individuals as opposed to systems, though they tend to congregate in free territories. The Mercenaries guild tend to go with the highest bidder and have no real allegiances other than that to their own agendas. They have decided to come together to protect one another but at the end of the day, every being is fighting for themselves.
Last but not least, The Syndicate makes up the criminal underworld that cares little for the political squabblings that have been going on lately. They have their own agenda and some even play both sides of the coin if it means that they can benefit from it. Wars always keep the black market in business and many shady deals are what determines the outcome of the war.
The outcome of all of this will be determined through the storytelling of Monomachiarum, so choose your allegiances wisely.
