New York City had been pretty quite these last few years, there were no villains to worry about which made Kaine feel a lot better. He was swinging from building to building as he tried to stay in the shadows, and keep to himself. This was a path that he was often familiar with as he followed the city blocks that lead him to his apartment. With his day job as a SHIELD teacher, he often found it hard to try and keep to himself but it was a good way to keep others out of trouble and every once in awhile he learned a thing or two from the next generation.
He landed on one roof top as he figured out that this was his apartment down below them. Apparently he had hoped to spend the night here since it was Friday evening and wanted to make sure that he got enough time to grade papers. Then next on his list was to make sure he got a visit in with Katherine.
It was true that some super heroes had retired, but not Kaine. Half or more than half of his life surrounded around his super hero identidy named Scarlet Spider. He wasn't quite sure if he knew what to do without it. Settling down as a civillian certainly wasn't in his book either, so he knew that wasn't an option. As he entered his apartment he turned on the lights seeing that it was just like he left it. Things had been upgraded like appliances and such sine he could afford them. However he looked up as he felt his spidey sense go off and he sighed, this was not a good start to his Friday afternoon. Well suppose the familiar phrase, expect the unexpected goes here. "Now what? This better be important." He said knowing his spidey sense didn't lie most of the time as he climbed out the window with his costume still on. So far, he couldn't see a thing but he knew there was a reason for it going off. However he just hadn't been able to figure out what it was just yet.
Kaine had come out of his shell a lot since he had joined the SHIELD group, and he was pretty sure that Katherine had been helping him 100 % as well. Before he had been bitter, and cold, and still he was a loner at times where he often asked for it and the others understood. With all these other spider heroes showing up, he realized perhaps he wasn't alone as he thought he was. They were mostly all like family to him.
Normally Anya would stick to her own neighborhood like she use to in her teenager days, leaving the other areas for the Avengers or others to handle. But things had recently spilled over from the bad neighborhoods of Brooklyn to other parts and she was trying to contain as much of it as she could on her own before others interfered. Unfortunately, Anya had been drawn some blocks away and was chasing down some crooks she had figured out had some dangerous connections, ones that could prove bad especially in the growing advancement of crime these days.
"For the love of...I'm way out of practice for this crap." Anya grumbled under her breathe, firing a web onto a building as she swung around the corner and finally noticed her targets that were making a run for an alley. "Oh no you don't slime balls," She growled as she used her momentum to send herself flying and kicking the two men in the back, causing them to let out pained sounds and faceplanting into the pavement and the force causing her to flip back and land on her feet. Though she failed to notice a familiar face across the street since her days on the Web Warriors, moving towards the downed men.
"Pathetic worms, always the same and never a challenge. Gave me a decent work out I suppose." Anya scoffed softly before knocking them out with violent punches to the head and webbing them to the ground. It was clear more than just Anya's attire had changed but her attitude and methods as well. Her up-beat attitude seeming a thing of the past.

Kaine climbed out from the apartment that he had called home for so long as he was trying to figure out exactly what had caused his spidey sense to go off. Usually it never had failed him before in the part of alerting danger. He quickly climbed onto some of the other buildings when he noticed someone moving through the night and he narrowed his eyes through the mask to try and get a better look. Unfortunately his vision wasn't in the best improvement from his younger days, it perhaps had gotten worse from the horrible scar that he got.
"Looks like I'm not the only one out." He said to himself as he did his best to keep up with the person they were fast, but he hadn't realized at first that it was someone he knew. It was only when he heard her voice did the faint hint of recognition come back to him as he realized it was Anya who had been apart of the Web warriors long ago.
"If it isn't Anya Corazone. I suppose it's been awhile." He said as he had climbed up top an advertising billboard to get a better view of where she was going. He had only gotten there at the last minute when the thugs had been webbed up. However it looks like Anya had pretty much taken care of it so he didn't even bother. "You know ever since you left the Web Warriors, you probably hurt a few...Like Nova, he was worried sick when he couldn't find you." He said crossing his arms. His voice sounded a bit harsh but he felt like Anya needed it, needed to hear him out. She had ditched so many friends without saying anything and even though Scarlet Spider and Nova didn't always get along, he made sure that his friends were looked after, even if he was a loner himself.
"But I can see you're doing fine on your own." He said as he was about ready to get down from the billboard, with a simple acrobatic flip, perhaps Anya didn't want to come back. So be it. He wasn't going to hound her like a little puppy.
"And the infamous Kaine Riley, still knocking about New York I see." Anya replied in kind, her tone not cold but rather curt, as if she was content in being civil to a former ally. She made sure her webbing was good, adding some extra for good measure before she turned her attention towards her former teammate, seeing his outfit wasn't any different than four years ago. The only difference she could see was maybe him being a bit buffer than he once was, but that was really it. Same old Kaine, to a point.
But she crossed her arms, glancing away for a moment as she listened to him, holding back a retort towards his words. She knew she probably hurt many of her friends and those she considered family, "I left for personal reasons Kaine, it would have been no different if you decided that the Web Warriors weren't a good fit." Anya replied, turning her gaze back to Kaine and watching him flip down to land near her. "I seem to recall you were more than ready to bolt the first chance you got, so you aren't exactly one to talk about staying." She finally retorted while uncrossing her arms and turning to the weapons that had slid from the men's hands.
She came over to grab the guns they had been carrying, webbing them to the wall out of reach if the men awoke but still listening to Kaine. "I only recently got back into heroics. Things have been picking up a little more recently and it seemed time to get back into action." She told Kaine as she turned back to him once more. "I handled crime fighting alone before anyway, before I joined SHIELD just as most of us did."
Post by Kaine Riley-Parker on Jul 6, 2017 0:18:09 GMT
"Yeah I did want to bolt...to be honest the Web Warriors seemed hopeless at first especially on that first mission." Kaine said as he shook his head. "But there was a bit of convincing that told me to stay otherwise." He added knowing the fight with Ultron left his scars, Anya and the others probably didn't know about it. However he wasn't really interested in getting into those gory details.
"Well if you do want to see Nova he's out on his own for most of the weekend, can't miss his blue Nova Force all that much in the sky." Kaine said knowing it was rare for SHIELD to give them day offs. But since they had climbed so high in the ranks it seemed like more privileges were given as they moved up. Even Sam matured these last few years as he was no longer the goofy kid that Anya was probably familiar with but a bit of a seasoned warrior who had gone through several fights now. He was a lot better. But Sam was still having trouble finding his dad, wherever he was out there.
"I did find out one thing while we were apart and I've not been enthused by it." Kaine said as he clenched his fists wondering how she'd take it. After doing a bit of digging with Oscorp he found out more about his past and most of his past had still been a mystery to him. "I'm a clone to Parker, a nobody pretty much. A copy and it sounds horrible when I talk about it." He said as he didn't like the idea of mentioning it towards Anya but she had a right to know since they were so close. He had even been aware of Peter's kid May who was making an attempt to try and become a web warrior and follow after her father. It might've been possible for her. But to think that she would be his niece was so wrong in so many ways. "I don't even want to think about that word that we're brothers." He said sounding like he made a fake gagging noise behind his mask. Well deep down he did care about Peter but not like that. Not enough to be considered brothers.
Kaine had wanted to go to Oscorp and get revenge, but what was one spider going to do anyways? He'd be out matched and captured again before he knew it. And of course, the others wouldn't allow it to happen. It frustrated him since he didn't know what action to take. Oscorp scientists and the higher up members could just bail themselves out of jail. So doing that was out of the question. He was at a loss on what to do here.
"Things changed that day I went to help the Spider Society Kaine, I couldn't stay. Not after what happened." Anya told him, grimacing as she recalled four years ago of what happened to her father, friends, and a man she had once considered a mentor and friend. She had never mentioned anything of that day to SHIELD nor her team, she had simply told SHIELD she was resigning from the organization and giving up her position in the Web Warriors, much to the shock of many no doubt. She had found it easier no one knew the truth of that day and was more content to allow others to speculate the reason she had gone.
The mention of Sam Alexander though made her frown, giving a slight shake of her head, "Sam would never forgive me for leaving like that Kaine, even I know that. Leaving so abruptly doesn't exactly leave the greatest impression on friends." Anya quipped, knowing full well the Nova would likely be angry with her for just taking off and not even making an effort to say good-bye to anyone. She had always prided herself before on making it clear what her actions were from time to time, or that she would be gone for a while or leaving for a certain amount of time, a courtesy her father had always taught her. But all of that had been thrown out of the window when she began to feel like a failure.
Though she looked back at Kaine when he mentioned he discovered something, raising an eye brow when she saw his fists clench. Was it really something so bad? Only one way to find out and she was doing just that. What Kaine said next actually caught her off guard, shock clear in her eyes behind her clear yellowed colored lenses and making her speechless for a long minute, letting such news sink in. After a moment her face became calm again, "Suppose that explains a lot." She admitted. "But you aren't a copy Kaine, and certainly a no body. So what if you are a clone of Peter Parker? Peter is his own person and so are you, both of you have made your own choices and impacts. Even if you look the same does not mean you are the same, and far as I'm concerned you never will be the same." Anya pointed out, but couldn't help smiling a little bit in amusement.
"Perhaps you two can view each other as brother-in-arms instead Kaine," She added trying not to imagine Kaine's look beneath the mask. "But just for the record, I still see the Web Warriors as my family Kaine, even if I am no longer among their numbers."

If Anya had been his voice of reason or consciousness, he may have had some things changed in his past, and he would've idolized her for that. She was a lot better at saying things...or at least better than he was. If he spoke his mind, usually it was rough and tough towards others. He especially used it towards his students while he was teaching them, sometimes they deserved it and sometimes they didn't. It was hard to say but Kaine knew when they needed to be taught a lesson that was the time for it. "I suppose you're right. Parker has his life, and I have my own." Kaine said. "I know we have our similarities, we are both loners." He said pointing out that like him he preferred to be alone or stay out of the public eye if he could.
"Perhaps that's a better way of putting it." Kaine said as he seemed to relax a bit, Anya seemed to be putting a lot of thought on his mind. He did that best when he was alone too. "I don't see us as brothers, but May Parker is my niece, she's been the recent addition to the Web Warriors and has a lot to learn." Kaine said shaking his head wondering if she'd just be like her father in some ways. She sure had potential even if SHIELD was a bit hard on her.
"Well if you don't want to come and see Sam, then at least visit the Web Warriors every once in awhile. We're still here and probably aren't going anywhere any time soon." Scarlet Said as he sat down in a crouching position. "You can meet new team members like May. She goes by the name Spider-Girl." He added knowing there were others, and Anya would meet them at some point if she was interested in coming.
"But you know, Anya if you do ever need help call at least the web warriors, I've learned the hard way that going alone isn't always the best of choices." He said as he rubbed his back remembering that sharp electrical stun he got once for intruding on Invisible Woman's building. That was forever going to be in his memory. He wondered how she was doing, but who knew at this point. She could've started her own family and such. However, he still considered her a friend despite the lack of contact.
"Even if you don't want to call yourself his brother, it's obvious Peter trusts you for him to call you that Kaine. It's just one way of him showing that trust." Anya decided to put it one other way that actually did make more sense. Peter wasn't always trusting and Kaine had a past that made him difficult to trust in the long run, especially for those who didn't know him or gave him a chance. But Kaine had more than proven himself a trusted ally and excellent member of the team. If anyone would have been more vocal to Kaine leaving the Web Warriors way back when it would have been Peter, something she would never find herself surprised by.
His suggestion of coming to see the Web Warriors made Anya scowl for a moment, not seeming so keen on doing such a thing. Many of the earlier Web Warriors had been friends and allies, practically her second family and she had pretty much abandoned them without a blink of an eye. It seemed almost...insulting to even step foot on the Helicarrier and expecting a warm welcome. "I don't know about that Kaine." Anya gave her head a shake, "I will think on it but I won't make any guarantees." Anya wasn't going to lie about something like that. She cared for everyone she still had in her life but on a personal level Anya was worried of failing them, that she would slip up and cause someone further pain and harm, something she did not want to risk yet again.
She cast her gaze back as she heard sirens, firing a web and pulling herself up onto the building to land beside Kaine and avoiding in being seen by the police as they arrived. "With all do respect Kaine, I'm fine doing my own thing. We spiders always end up being loners and I guess I just got back into that tradition." Anya said as she watched the police begin ripping and pilling at the webbing. "Besides, I don't think I need the Web Warriors to handle the crime going on in Brooklyn, I got that covered."

Kaine's past was indeed a rough one, perhaps the first traumatic experience had been seeing the news on when his adopted mother and father had died on the plane crash that had happened so long ago. No body knew about it except for a select few, and he couldn't help but wonder why it had been covered up like that. Regardless, it was a long way down the road of trusting few and hating plenty of people out there, especially with Oscorp. he had many scars mentally and physically but Kaine owed a bit of that towards the web warriors for letting him heal, however some hadn't always fully healed. Some of the new members of the team were indeed ones that he was skeptical of and he didn't trust one bit.
"I know I'll always be a loner at heart, you can't change that part of me." Kaine said. "If I want to be left alone I mean it." He added knowing that was something he agreed with Anya for this one for sure. "But that's fine if you don't want to come, I understand." Kaine also heard the police sirens as they arrived to pick up the bad guys. They sliced at the webbing that was holding the bad guys in place if they had knives with them, Kaine's stingers would've easily done it from the looks of things.
"Hmph I will say one thing, I feel like the time in the Web Warriors may have been worth it I healed a bit of my emotional and physical scars there." He added. "But don't ever tell anyone I said that." He said realizing it was indeed something deep. he probably wouldn't have admitted it in front of the others. Kaine just didn't like that mushy gushy stuff about friendship all that much, he tried to act like the tough guy and sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
"Looks like the police have it taken care of here just fine, I guess we can lay low for now to avoid doing paper work and getting questioned by them." Kaine said as he was watching the police for a bit and with his good eye behind the mask. not too many knew about his scar except for a handful like Katherine, probably Peter, and Anya but it was something he didn't want his enemies to think about or know about making his vision a bit off. "Maybe I aught to hang around a bit with you, there may be more in store for us tonight if you want to do a double team up for a bit." He added and didn't even bother mentioning SHIELD. Quite frankly, Kaine didn't really want them on his night off either.
"I would be shocked if you didn't do things on your own still from time to time." Anya admitted towards him, having never known Kaine to not do things solo from time to time. Then again, majority of the Web Warriors team at one point or another worked alone and still preferred it, perhaps even more than they might be willing to admit. Looking back on it, Anya almost wondered if they shouldn't have been like the slightly less famous Defenders who only came together when they were needed to do so. It would likely have made things a little less complicated in the long run but things had run their course and they had survived. Well, mostly.
She couldn't help being silent for a long moment, letting Kaine speak and was glad to hear Kaine got something positive out of the team. "Least it wasn't a complete waste like you expected." Anya smiled, giving Kaine a slight nudge with her elbow in a playful manner, knowing that had once been his attitude and it had been difficult to change. But a part of her felt a need to tell someone she knew, someone she left behind the whole reason why she had left yet found it difficult opening her mouth about it. She actually opened her mouth a moment as if to speak before closing it, chewing on her lip as she pondered what to say to Kaine. "I won't say a word about what you told me, spider's honor." Anya assured him, giving the usual sign of the scout's honor promise before letting her hand fall back beside her.
"I'd prefer to get back to Brooklyn Kaine. Things get crazy there already so my top priority is keeping the peace." Anya stood as she spoke, stretching slightly before crossing her arms. "Besides, I'm sure you have other things to handle than rounding up common thugs, not exactly SHIELD's MO to worry about street crime."

It was true that Kaine was solo one before he came to the Web Warriors and still did. He knew the others like May, Pwter and now Anya were on the solo streak. May still had a lot to learn but Kaine had made an attempt to give her feed back on some areas since he taught her while she was still training. "Yeah I believe May Parker is no different than we are with solo missions but she is still young." Kaine said as he knew she'd do fine.
"Yeah you know me, the tough guy, Scarlet Spider." Kaine said almost a bit sarcasticly also. He didn't mind the elbow that much although he did move a bit from it. "Thanks." He added.
"Well if you are going to Brooklyn, I think I might join you. I haven't seen that side of New York since a Web Warriors mission and that is not exactly sight seeing to me." Kaine pointed out as he went into a kneeling position out of habit. When Anya was ready to leave so was he. He knew Brooklyn was probably a subway ride away but Anya might have another way of getting there. "Ladies first." Kaine said at least showing somewhat of a gentleman side. He may have gotten a bit softer when he was around his friends back then things may have been different. Anya may have been surprised to hear this but he was interested in a change of scenery.
"Most of us started young." Anya remarked, knowing majority of the spider heroes started as teenagers with the rare exceptions to those who were actually older when they started as adults. But for the most part starting young seemed the most common theme with heroes and the tradition still lived on from what Kaine had just said. "Perhaps I'll cross paths with May, and if I do I can see of maybe passing along some knowledge. Not that it might actually be helpful." Anya remarked, turning to look down as the police had the men cuffed and shoving them into the back seat of their cruiser, and it was clear her job was done here.
"Just don't expect anything fancy to happen. Brooklyn is bad, but nothing like what things use to be a decade ago." Anya added, extending her hand and firing her organic webbing towards a building nearby. "Hope you can keep up." Anya actually gave a playful smirk before she pushed off the building, swinging down to swing around a corner and firing another web to the next building. It felt odd to be able to swing across the city with a partner, much less a familiar face she had not seen since the times of the Web Warriors.

It was true when they had first started out they didn't know much, Kaine had gradually come to learn more about his powers when he was in Oscorp. However one power has always remained a mystery to him and that was the Mark of Kaine. He didn't know much about it except for the fact that it ate away metal or even someone's face. It would be so deadly it'd leave someone in the hospital for weeks just because he touched someone, and Katherine had witnessed it already and he hated it. He quickly dismissed that dark part of his history knowing good things would always come, since Anya last saw Kaine it was clear he had matured more and probably gained a bit of muscle but he was still the same old Kaine.
"I kept up with you when we were on the Web Warriors, and this should be no different." Kaine remarked, he sent his own black gloved hand forward with some webbing of his own it had red and white coloring on it as he swung forward to a nearby building. Although he thought he lost Anya for a second he quickly found her shadow again as she moved through the buildings. They kept this up for some time as he bounded across the buildings like he had done this on a daily basis. And even though it was New York he could tell the atmosphere in Brooklyn was different and for the fact that they could see the Brooklyn bridge in the distance, the massive bridge had stood for decades and surprisngly looked ancient in the futuristic looking city.
"That was one jog in New York that I haven't taken in awhile." He remarked as he landed on a broad looking gargoyle. It had sharp horns where he put one of his feet on to rest and another on the wings. It seemed to be glaring down at the humans as they walked passed unknown that two figures were watching them from above. "But it felt good to be out of the norm for a bit. These last few weeks have been nothing but grading tests and exams." Kaine said knowing he needed a break. Now he felt bored and antsy like he wanted something to do. Heck he was willing to chase down a few more bad guys just to do something. The night was young, and it was probably about 9:00 pm now. They'd be out well past midnight and he wouldn't be tired, he was used to it by now.
Anya swung around buildings, leapt along their sides, or dashed across the buildings, an exhilarating run few really knew the freedom of. And that’s what it always felt like. It was an unusual feeling of feeling like you could go anywhere, any place, which nowhere was out of one’s reach when they moved so fluently, swiftly, and in an agile way around the city rather than concerning themselves with vehicles or the like. It was maybe one thing her and a few others could find some solace in feeling their problems melted away and for a short time could concentrate on that feeling of just moving, body reacting to long held routines and actions. Such things for Anya were rusty but the way her body reacted to everything felt like she had never left.
Finally, she felt her feet touch the roof of a building with several gargoyles acting as guardians and watchful eyes, but having two extra occupants who did the very same with no one below none the wiser. “Guess you did keep up.” Anya remarked, having noticed that unlike Kaine she was somewhat out of practice after all, but that was a more personal choice than simply her not training a lot over the years. The only real practice she had was keeping her reflexes and other physical abilities up but not exactly her reaction time with swinging and running like that. “Same. Admittedly, I sometimes miss those long runs Hybrid put us through, it at least kept us busy and gave us a sense of feeling that we may actually work as a team once in a while.” Anya’s look became distant, recalling the occasional run the Web Warriors had and how they all actually seemed to have fun and enjoy themselves rather than bickering and at one another’s throats.
“Grading papers?’ Anya gave Kaine a shocked look, “You’re a teacher?! I never would have expected the great, dark Kaine Riley to be shaping young minds!” Anya chuckled, leaning against the wing of another gargoyle but giving Kaine a slight smile, “But I’m sure it teaches you patience.” She added, her tone a bit more light hearted and serious as she glanced at the Brooklyn Bridge. “I’ve been doing something similar; teach a gymnastics class here in Brooklyn in my civilian life, same place I use to be a student myself. Only thing that’s maybe kept some of my skills sharp.”

"Brooklyn isn't half bad of a place, I may come down here a bit more in the future, down town New York you get used to after awhile. Same place, same faces show up all the time believe it or not." Kaine said but he figured that Anya probably knew that by now since she grew up in the area. Kaine did for some time before moving to Houston. One thing about that place was it was hot, and he sweated so bad sometimes in his suit he could hardly see in it since it clouded up his vision, he wasn't planing on going back there again.
"Yeah I know, a person like me being a teacher?" Kaine asked. "I was a bit reluctant at first but some SHIELD members came in and asked me to do it, and it pays the bills for the apartment that I own." Kaine admitted knowing he hadn't really had much reaction with kids, this was helping as far as he was concerned but he had a feeling he'd never get comfortable with the younger members of society. He wasn't really comfortable with them even though he had been one himself at one point. It was odd, right?
"That's good that you were able to find a job too, Anya at least you're able to find something you're happy about." Kaine added as he watched the people down below. None of them appeared to be aware of the fact that two spider heroes were above them watching their every move. However Kaine wasn't all that concerned, if there was any form of danger, his spidey sense usually let them know that there was something going on. "Hm looks as quiet as ever, usualy the spidey sense would've gone off already." Kaine said as he put his hands on one of the horns to get into a better crouching position. Time would tell for them when someone needed help.
